Cayman Islands Investment Fund License

Investment Funds in the Cayman Islands are regulated under the Mutual Funds Law 2015 Revision. The Hedge Funds also fall within the same regulation as they fall under the definition of Mutual Funds in the Cayman Islands. Obtaining a Cayman Islands Investment Fund license will also permit the operation of hedge funds.

The application for a Cayman Islands Investment Fund license in the form of a Mutual Fund license can be of three main types: a Licensed Mutual Fund, an Administered Mutual Fund, or a Registered Mutual Fund. The first step for obtaining a Cayman Islands Investment Fund License is to register a local Cayman Islands Company or a Limited Partnership or Unit Trust.

The formal application for a license has to be made to the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority.
A Cayman Islands Investment Fund must have a registered office in the Islands or must have a licensed mutual fund administrator providing its principal office in the Islands. There is also a continuing requirement to inform the regulator about any possible deviations from the licensing conditions during the time that the license is in force. The fee for an application for a Mutual Fund license is $3500. After completion of the application process, the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority will issue a certificate of registration.

An annual fee of $3500 also has to be paid every year to renew the license.
