Polish Citizenship Overview

The request for Polish citizenship can be made by any foreigner to the President of the Republic of Poland. The President has the constitutional authority to grant citizenship to foreigners without any restrictions. The decision made by the President is final, arbitrary, and does not require any explanation. This method of obtaining Polish citizenship is not governed by the Code of Administrative Procedure. Therefore, deadlines for administrative procedures do not apply, and the processing time may be longer due to the involvement of multiple authorities. While the President’s decision cannot be appealed, individuals may submit another application.

If you wish to obtain Polish citizenship, you can submit an application in person or by correspondence with a signature officially certified through the voivode or Polish consul competent for your permanent residence. The President of the Republic of Poland has discretionary power to grant or refuse citizenship, and their decisions are arbitrary, final, and not subject to appeal. Provisions of the Code of Administrative Procedure do not apply, except for provisions regarding the service of correspondence.

Your residence card and passport should be valid for at least 6 months at the time of applying, and the data contained in your civil status files, residence card, and foreign passport should be uniform. If you don’t speak Polish to a communicative degree, you must appear with a Polish sworn translator to apply. The application for a minor child must be signed by both parents, and a child over 16 years of age must agree to be granted Polish citizenship. If you have a Pole Card, you are obliged to return it when you receive the document confirming the acquisition of Polish citizenship.
