United Kingdom Residency Overview
Investors seeking a residency visa for the UK can consider the Tier 1 investment visa. This requires an investment of £2 million and allows temporary residency in the UK for the investor and their immediate family. This residency lasts for 3 years and 4 months and applicants can apply to extend this residency a further 2 years. Investors can then apply for indefinite leave to remain after 5 years and British citizenship after 6 years. There is no direct UK citizenship by investment program.
United Kingdom Residency
The UK left the EU on 31 January 2020. From 1 January 2021, a new immigration system will be in place which will require EU citizens coming to the UK to apply for a visa.
To qualify for the golden residency program, you must demonstrate that you have the financial means to support yourself and your dependents without taking employment (apart from self-employment or business). You also have to make the UK your main home, meaning that you cannot spend more than 180 days a year outside the country. You do not have to demonstrate business management experience or English skills at this point.
You will first receive a Tier 1 visa for 40 months and have to make the selected investment within 3 months of entry. After the end of the 40-month initial period, your residence permit will be extended for 2 years if you have continued to satisfy the requirements throughout your stay.
After 5 years, you will become a permanent resident. For this status, you have to demonstrate knowledge of English, Welsh or Scottish Gaelic language and basic familiarity with the life and culture of the UK. You will also be able to apply for UK citizenship (additional criteria apply).
What are the requirements for UK Residency?
Requirements of the Investors and the High Net worth Individuals, the United Kingdom has started a new Visa Regime called the ‘Tier 1 Investment Visa’ which ultimately enables the holder to obtain Permanent Residence in the United Kingdom for an indefinite duration.
The main criteria for obtaining a Tier 1 Investment Visa is the applicant holding a minimum of GBP 2 million under his control in a UK Bank ready to be invested in approved investments including Government Bonds, UK Registered Companies (except investments in the property) for a minimum of 5 years.
The investor is expected to spend a large amount of time, i.e. around six months in the United Kingdom and he is initially provided with a visa for 40 months. The visa can be extended if the condition of maintaining the investment of GBP 2 million is fulfilled.
The Government has also provided an option for obtaining an expedited Permanent residence by an ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) Permit in the United Kingdom. The Permit can be obtained by an increased investment as follows:
- An investment of GBP 10 million enables the investor to obtain the permit after 2 years of settlement.
- An investment of GBP 5 million enables the investor to obtain the permit after 3 years of settlement
Under normal circumstances, the permit can only be obtained after 5 years of settlement. There are also other conditions and requirements for the Permanent Residency permits for the dependents and family members.
